Skate Kitchen by Carmina Flores

We are now officially in September, though most of us are in denial. We are coming out of summer and going into fall. We want the nostalgic feeling of the last day of summer before school started. Remembering our friends we didn’t get to hang out with, or wishing we had a group of friends to wish we could have hung out with. This movie fits this perfectly.

Skate Kitchen, if you already know is a group of skateboarding girls from New York. In this movie, they get to play fictional versions of themselves. During one summer Camille a suburban teenager befriends a group of girl skateboarders. As she explores New York City subculture, she learns the true meaning of friendship and loyalty. We get to see a new take on skateboarding. These girls know how to skateboard 10 times better than the boys. This film shows how their families are against skateboarding and even their city. The struggle to skateboard for girls is a struggle every girl can imagen. You laugh at the fights that breakout, you get lost in New York City. This is a realist teen movie for our generation.

You see New York's fashion, well listening to a great soundtrack. You see yourself during this film, with all the characters. You'll even play the soundtrack on a drive at sunset and at 1 am in your room. This film is perfect for remembering the good old days during the summer. You’ll get outfit inspo and by the end, you’ll start acting like one of the characters. (available for watching on Hulu)

If you're too lazy from quarantine and don’t want to watch a 2-hour film, they have made their own tv show that came out this summer. Betty, in this tv show it’s the same characters but a whole different story. Still your favorite characters, but their high on mushrooms buying a pet rat. Great fights, a better soundtrack and whole episodes on sexual abuse. These girls go through everything, so much more than in the movie.

(Available on Hulu and HBO)
